Energy Meteorology
Overview
The use of Renewable Energies is strongly governed by meteorological constraints. Solar and wind resources are the "fuels" of these new energy sources. Planning and operation of Eenewable Energy Conversion Systems needs detailed knowledge about the highly fluctuating energy sources in order to precisely characterize the performance of these systems.
The expected large-scale integration of Renewable Energies into the existing Energy
Supply Structures - regulated by national and international authorities - will significantly increase the importance of meteorological information.
The new research field Energy Meteorology is mainly concerned with the Development and Adaptation of methods and operational techniques for the characterization of the Energy Fluxes as well as for the prediction of the expected power in high spatial and temporal resolution.
An important aspect of research in Energy Meteorology is its high interdisciplinarity. Besides physical and meteorological methods an extensive know-how in the fields of Wind and Solar Energy Conversion (Physics, Engineering), Energy Supply Structures (Electrical Engineering, Economics), Information Technology, and Environmental Sciences is necessary.
